India gets its first Chief of Defence Staff

Outgoing Indian Army chief General Bipin Rawat has been named as India's first Chief of Defence Staff. General Rawat retires from service on 31 Dec, 2019 after completing a full three-year term as the Chief of Army Staff. General Rawat is the first officer to hold the post of the Chief of Defence Staff announced by PM Modi earlier this year. The CDS will function as a single-point advisor to the government on matters related to the military and will focus on better synergy between the Indian Army, Indian Air Force and the Indian Navy.

Army Chief General Manoj Mukund Naravane in his maiden press conference said that as far as PoK or Pak Occupied Kashmir is concerned, there’s a parliamentary resolution that all of Jammu and Kashmir, including the region occupied by Pakistan, belongs to India. If Parliament wants and gives orders, the Army will take appropriate action, he added. His predecessor and the current CDS (Chief of Defence Staff) has been far more strident when it came to PoK.
