There has been significant improvement in the Left Wing Extremism (LWE) security situation in the country in the last five years. Government of India (GoI) approved ‘National Policy and Action Plan to address LWE’ in 2015.
The Policy envisages a multi-pronged strategy involving security related measures, development interventions, ensuring rights and entitlements of local communities, etc. Steadfast implementation of this policy has resulted in consistent decline in LWE violence across the nation.
The number of LWE related violent incidents have come down by 77% in 2022 in comparison to high of 2010. The number of resultant deaths (Security Forces + Civilians) have also reduced by 90% in 2022 as compared to high of 2010. Details of LWE related violent incidents and deaths in Chhattisgarh during the last five years are as under:-
This was stated by the Minister of State for Home Affairs, Shri Nityanand Rai in a written reply to a question in the Lok Sabha.
Earlier Minister Nityanand Rai has identified 176 police stations of 45 districts that reported related violence in 2022 in response to a question in the parliament.
This comes even as in 2010, at least 465 police stations of 96 districts had reported LWE-related violence.
Rai said the number of LWE related deaths (security forces and civilians) has reduced from an all-time high of 1005 in 2010 to just 98 in 2022.
126 districts were covered under the SRE scheme in 2010 but that number came down to 90 in April 2018 and further to 70 in July 2021.
