The Arakan Yoma range, with peaks reaching more than 2740 meters (about 9000 ft), forms a barrier between Myanmar and the subcontinent of India. The Shan Plateau, originating in China, has an average elevation of about 910 meters (about 3000 ft.). The country became a sovereign independent state in January 1948 after more than 100 years of colonial administration. The government is based on the 2008 Constitution with the National League for Democracy (NLD) led by Aung Suu Kyi in power. Myanmar faces multiple security challenges integration of groups on the ethnic periphery continuing to remain a concern. [Source Government of Myanmar website]
