Defence Technology which is synonymous to military technology includes as per Encyclopaedia Britannica (EB) the range of weapons, equipment, structures, and vehicles used specifically for the purpose of warfare. It includes the knowledge required to construct such technology, to employ it in combat, and to repair and replenish it.
EB divides technology of war into five categories which include offensive and defensive weapons, transportation, communicationsand sensors. Information, cyber and space are today increasingly forming a component of defence technology. Militaries emphasise on building indigenous technologies.
In India the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) is the principal agency for development of military technology. DRDO is a network of more than 50 laboratories which are deeply engaged in developing defence technologies covering various disciplines, like aeronautics, armaments, electronics, combat vehicles, engineering systems, instrumentation, missiles, advanced computing and simulation, special materials, naval systems, life sciences, training, information systems and agriculture. In addition recently young scientists laboratories have been added.
Several major projects for the development of missiles, armaments, light combat aircrafts, radars, electronic warfare systems etc are on hand and significant achievements have already been made in several such technologies.
DRDO has a vision to empower India with cutting-edge defence technologies and a mission to achieve self-reliance in critical defence technologies and systems, while equipping our armed forces with state-of-the-art weapon systems and equipment in accordance with requirements laid down by the three Services. DRDO's pursuit of self-reliance has led to successful indigenous development and production of strategic systems and platforms. [Source DRDO Web Site and EB]
